Who Shines on American Idol tonight?

Each week predictions for American Idol get more fun as contestants begin to shine. Who is your favorite?

If you didn’t catch performances tonight, here is a recap.

Tonight the theme was songs from the year the contestant was born. Kicking off the show was:

Naima Adedapo – from 1984 singing “What’s Love Got to do with it” by Tina Turner. The song didn’t work for me at all – I don’t think it showcased Naima’s talent or personality in the least. It was kind of a mess and a bit of cringeworthy. Steven loved it. Jennifer commented on her being “consistently pitchy” and advised her to work on it. Randy watched the song back from last week and said it wasn’t good either – she’s all over the place. With the performance tonight she may be at risk of going home.

Paul McDonald – born in 1984 performed Elton John’s “I Guess That’s Why They Call it the Blues”. Okay I used to be a bigger fan than I am now. Perhaps it’s the drunk and wobbly swaggering stage performing, or the strange arm hand flinging, but I’m kind of thinking it is the flatness of his performing – it’s all about the same level of energy – not much. Sad because I like the uniqueness of his voice – I just wish he could have some ups and downs and true highlights. Jennifer gushed that he has star quality even with his cold. Randy differed a little in claiming Paul was a bit pitchy but he likes the new style – in making whatever he sings his own. Steven  proclaimed “you define a cool dude in a loose mood. Your swagger is way cool.”

Thia Megia was born in 1995. Wow! She’s so young. Performing “Colors of the Wind” by Vanessa Williams. I can imagine Thia becoming voice for the next Disney princess movie. She’d fit that role perfectly. But I think she’s out of her depth in American Idol. She’s darling though. She does have a sweet voice when singing soft and low but her upper register and power is not quite there yet. Randy said the vocals were okay but the problem he’s having is that she’s been singing ballads every week – and it’s boring. Steven wondered if the song was who she thought she was. Jennifer loves the quality of her voice but now she’s playing it safe and that her vibrato needs work.

And then comes James Durbin. Choosing Bon Jovi’s “I’ll Be There” from 1989. And can I say that he was such an adorable little kid – probably one of the cutest kids I’ve ever seen. What a smile – totally made me happy. The “tail” is back – and I could do without that. But I really liked the performance – except for a few off notes. He seems so comfortable on stage and performing. The crowd went wild – he has that effect on people. Steven said “don’t get too pop-y on me” – and then proclaimed that if James got to the finale and sang Aerosmith – that Steven would sing it with him. Now that is a pairing that will be super fun to watch. Both Jennifer and Randy want to see that too. Jennifer loved it. Randy said there were a couple of pitch spots but he knows how to make it his own. Ryan wanted to confirm that Steven will perform on American Idol and Steven’s reply was “that man has a rich vein of inner crazy… I’ll join him.” I wasn’t quite sure what that meant – except we can look forward to a duet at some point with Steven Tyler and James Durbin.

Haley Reinhart - born in 1990. She decided to sing Whitney Houston’s “I’m Your Baby Tonight.” It started out rough for me and didn’t recover. I felt like after James it went from a rock concert to a high school talent show. She’s talented, but truly not polished enough yet. She might be going home next. Jennifer said she looked beautiful – which to me means that her commentary won’t be great. “You have a lot of character in your voice.” But she commented on her performance quality – not quite knowing where she wants to go on stage. Randy said he was confused – “I’m not sure you’re sure you know who you are. The vocals were okay, it wasn’t a great performance.” Steven said “That was sweet and tough. We want to hear more blues – dig into that.” I don’t think she’s found her niche yet – which will likely translate into not finding her fan base yet either.

Stefano Langone – born in 1989 – chose to sing “If You Don’t Know Me Now” by Simply Red. I really like his voice but it’s not one that stands out yet. He did a really good job but the song seemed to go on a long time – but I did like what he did with it. He’s cute and will likely have a lot of girls voting for him – but I wish there was something a bit more unique about him. Randy said  it was “the best performance of the night so far… highest degree of difficulty and he slayed it.” Steven – “beautiful phrasing – it was over the top.” Jennifer said it was the perfect song for him.

Pia Toscano – born in 1988 selected “Where Do Broken Hearts Go” by Whitney Houston. Wow the girl can sing. I didn’t love her outfit – thought it wasn’t very flattering on her – but her vocals soared. She’s top 3 for sure (unless she gets really cocky and alienates America). Steven proclaimed “You are why this show is called American Idol.” Jennifer was happy to hear her sing something up-tempo. “It was perfect for you.” Randy announced that she’s in the competition to win it.

Scotty McCreery singing Travis Tritt – of course. Born in 1993 his intro video showcased him impersonating Elvis – super cute. “Can I Trust You With My Heart.” He began and I’m amazed at how good he is continually – especially in his niche. Holy cow, he’s got a great voice. His performing could use some help – and maybe a hat would make him feel a little less young. If you don’t look and only listen – he’s so incredible. He’s cute but so young. Jennifer encouraged him to keep going. Randy said “You did [Travis] proud. I love seeing you take chances. We believe in you.” Steven commented that it was really good.

Karen Rodriguez was born in 1989. “Love Will Lead You Back” by Taylor Dayne. I couldn’t quite get past the foot tall high hair and costume from Battlestar Galactica, and then breaking into Spanish for the second verse – I just felt that it was pandering rather than being truly “felt”. After being in the bottom 3 last week, I would not be surprised if Karen went home this week. Randy said it started off rough – it was better than last week but he wasn’t jumping up and down. Steven said he loved it when she broke into her “ethnic what it is-ness.” Jennifer said she could tell she was a little scared but attacked it.

Casey Abrams – performed the first Nirvana song on American Idol. Born in 1991 – surprising because he seems older than that to me. His parents were very entertaining. “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” Casey said he likes taking risks and hopes America gets it. He wanted to try it. Coming out with the base guitar he began singing and it was as if we had all been transported back in time. He rocked it completely – I’m not a huge Nirvana fan – but he did such a great job – it made it fun. Completely unexpected from him – but wow he was totally entertaining. Standing ovation from the crowd. Steven “You’re so crazy and you’re so talented – that’s the perfect match.” Jennifer “That’s some big shoes to fill …  it got a little screechy but you know I love you.” Randy said “What I’m most impressed about .. you love taking risks .. It wasn’t your best performance but I like that you’re fearless.”

Lauren Alaina – several sad thoughts – first she has the flu and seemed a bit loopy on stage (perhaps being on cold medicine or something.) And secondly I had completely forgotten about her until they announced her – so she’s not someone I was looking forward to hearing. I like her but I’m nervous about her performance based on the introduction with Ryan Seacrest – as she gave him a mask with lips painted on it to protect him from getting the flu and giggled incoherently. Singing a song from 1994 by Melissa Etheridge, ” I’m The Only One.” I think the flu (and/or medicine) agrees with her and helping her performance. I thought she did a great job. She didn’t make it totally unique,  but did sing it very well and seemed like she was having fun. Jennifer thought she gave it a country flavor and made it her own. Randy told her to get a cold every week. Steven announced that she was a shining star.

Our final contestant was Jacob Lusk. Born in 1987 he selected “Alone” by Heart. As soon as he announced the song I got excited – just anticipating what he would do with the song. He has the power and voice to make it completely great. It started a little bit rough but then he took it a little gospel and I was hopeful that he would blow it out – but there were a few really pitchy places – unexpected from him. It didn’t work at all for me – even a little painful to listen to. Sad because I was hoping I’d love it. Randy proclaimed “Very nice performance… it got a little sharp but you found your way back. Jacob is in it to win it.” Steven “your momma gave you the moxie that makes you who you are right now. If gospels had a baby they named it Jacob Lusk.” Jennifer loved that he gives himself completely to whatever he does and everybody feels it.

So at the end of the evening – who do you love?

My favs of the night are James Durbin, Pia Toscano, Scotty McCreery, and Casey Abrams (I liked Stefano too but he doesn’t stand out enough yet.)

I think at risk are Naima Adedapo, Karen Rodriguez, and Haley Reinhart. What do you think?

James Durbin Leaving American Idol?

Okay – did you really think that headline was serious? Were you scared?

Of course, James Durbin is NOT leaving American Idol – I’m predicting he’s likely to be the overall winner!

Did your favorite American Idol contestant get voted off this week?

With 30 million votes in one night – unless a contestant connects with America – they will be sent packing with tears and shattered dreams in the most dramatic rose ceremony ever! … oh sorry… wrong show.

Your eliminated contestant is…. to be announced in a minute…

But truly sad and scary news – Casey Abrams is in the hospital – no announcement about what he’s suffering with but we all hope he gets better soon and back to the competition. The show would not be the same without Casey!

American Idol results show began with a Michael Jackson medley – it was actually quite telling and a good indicator of who is ready to move forward in their career and who is a fledgling artist. As the show has continued it seems that America may want a refined and polished artist as their Idol, rather than a newbie who has to learn the ropes. The opening act made Pia Toscano look amazing, Naima Adedapo stand out, James Durbin front and center – and yet others faded, obviously lip syncing or not singing well and then it became a lip syncing fest again – I hate it when they do that!

Adam Lambert returns to American Idol – I have compared James Durbin with Adam Lambert in the past – but watching Adam perform tonight – I can honestly say I think James is WAY more talented and I like him so much more. There’s no comparison from here on out. (Okay – for all you Adam Lambert fans out there – please no hate mail – we’re all entitled to opinions and just because I’m right doesn’t mean you have to spread any ugliness… insert big cheeky grin here.)

Back to our results… the bottom three this week were Karen Rodriguez, Ashthon Jones, Haley Reinhart.

It’s a bit telling that all 3 in the bottom were girls – they need to step it up this season in order to compete with the guys.

The eliminated contestant was Ashthon Jones. When Jennifer Lopez had to tell her that the judges would not be saving her for the season, I have to say that it was a bit touching – you could tell that it was hard on Jennifer to disappoint Ashthon. It’s not that Ashthon is not talented – she is – but I think emotional connection to the audience and to the music goes much farther in today’s society of social media and personal connection.

Wishing Ashthon good luck, hoping Casey gets better soon, and excited to see what next week brings!

American Idol Launches New Stars

I have not seen the results show tonight – as I’m just catching up from performance night – but I wanted to weigh in on my predictions from last night.

This season of American Idol has so much talent – and I love that the contestants have mentors who can help mold them and teach them how to refine their own persona within the music industry.

New stars have begun to shine this week…

My absolutely favorites from last night are 1) James Durbin 2) Casey Abrams 3) Pia Toscano 4) Scotty McCreery. It’s feeling to me like this season is going to be a showdown between James and Casey – I love them both – but they are so totally different, it’s hard to make the call on who America will select as the ultimate American Idol winner.

My take on individual songs – obviously it’s past the point of true importance – as the results have been announced already. But as I do not know who went home, I still wanted to comment. Please bear with me.

Lauren Alaina – sang “Any Man of Mine” by Shania Twain. Did a good job, but nothing truly unique. She’s a darling girl and likeable, but I wanted much more that would make her stand out. My guess is she’ll stick around as she is humble and America will give her another chance to shine.

Casey Abrams – sang “With a Little Help from My Friends” by Joe Cocker. I love Casey – his self-depreciating humor, his uniqueness and he actually gets cuter each week as all of that shines through. I love that he’s not cocky, but seems confident and loves the music. He also makes me “feel” and I have yet to be disappointed by any performance.

Ashthon Jones – sang “When You Tell Me That You Love Me” by Diana Ross. I didn’t want her to follow the judges comparison and put herself side-by-side with Diana Ross. Diana is legendary and Ashthon simply paled in comparison. Even her dress and hair made me feel that she was trying to be someone else – rather than making the song her own and shining in her own right. She’s got a beautiful voice but it did not work at all for me. I kept wanting her to be more real – to show some type of emotion and make me feel something. Didn’t work and I think she’ll likely go home.

Paul McDonald – sang “Come Pick Me Up” by Ryan Adams. I like Paul and his unique style. But tonight I was left wanting more. It was a bit low and even though his voice reminds me a bit of Rod Stewart – he didn’t bring the depth and power I wanted. I didn’t like it tonight. But because he’s so different he might be safe for another week. However, unless he steps it up quite a bit, I’m afraid he’s at risk.

Pia Toscano – sang “All By Myself” by Celine Dion. Can I just say that I was seriously worried for her – I mean, no one can compete with Celine. But I have to say I was really pleasantly surprised. She did a beautiful job. That girl can sing. Next week I hope she will bring a bit more of her own personality – so I can feel any kind of connection with her. She’s beautiful and talented and I like her – but I want a little more emotion there.

James Durbin – sang “Maybe I’m Amazed” by Paul McCartney. James is by far the winner of the night. He took that song and made it completely his own. He’s real. He’s amazing. He’s so likeable and I think most of America is rooting for him. I liked his new haircut, cleaner look – it works well for him.

Haley Reinhart – sang “Blue” by LeAnn Rimes. She has a beautiful voice and did quite well with the song, but I got bored and just wanted so much more. I didn’t feel like she connected to the song, nor to the audience as much as some of the others. One other drawback for her is that she’s a bit forgettable for me. I didn’t even remember anything about her when they announced she was singing next. That’s not a great sign for longevity on American Idol. But she’s talented. I just hope she gets another chance to grab the audience’s attention and get us to love her and not just enjoy her singing.

Jacob Lusk – sang “I Believe I Can Fly” by RKelly. How can I even begin to describe Jacob? I liked his interview as he felt more down-to-earth and not quite “bigger than life” as he’s been portrayed previously. I connected a bit more to him from the interview. The song was amazing. I just do not seem him fitting into American Idol. I see him as a seasoned classic or Broadway performer – very talented – and in a different class. Not better than other contestants necessarily – just completely different style. He truly does have an incredible voice and I hope this will lead to great things for him, but I am not sure how far he will go in the competition.

Thea Megia – sang “Smile” by Michael Jackson. I loved, loved, loved the first half of the song – when it was so sweet, tender, real, and emotional. I must admit I even had a few tears in my eyes because it was so sweet and spoke directly to my heart. But when she took it into a jazzy style it did not work at all for me. I think her sad tears after the performance might get her more votes this week as people will be cheering her on. She’s truly got an angelic voice. I’m not sure she has the star power or entertainment factor of an American Idol winner – but I think she’ll be okay this week.

Stephano Langore – sang “Lately” by Stevie Wonder. I think it was a brave and risky choice. He still reminds me a bit of David Archuleta and I like him but he didn’t stand out enough for him to be a front runner at this point. He did a good job – and I hope he sticks around for us to see more of him. But he’s another one that is a little forgettable.

Karen Rodrigues – sang something by Selena. It was probably my least favorite of the night. It did not work for me at all. It was just an imitation of Selena that was not great. She’s beautiful and I like her, but I almost feel as though she’s putting on a sweet smile – but there is no connection there. I think she’s likely to go home – but she might be safe as she’ll likely have the Latino fan base. Not an easy call.

Scotty McCreery – sang “The River” by Garth Brooks – one of my favorite songs in the whole world by one of my favorite artists. Garth Brooks is truly unique and powerful and one of the best entertainers in the world. I think Scotty did a good job – and I adore his voice. But he is not Garth and I wanted a bit more depth of emotion/passion from him. He took it to a bit more “upbeat” feeling rather than an intensity of emotion that I get from Garth. He’s totally safe this week – but I hope he will showcase himself a bit more next week rather than just doing a good job on a legend’s song.

Naima Adedapo – sang “Umbrella” by Rihanna. It started out a bit “iffy” for me. I loved when she brought the Reggae into it – that felt so much more natural for her and was a very cool jive – but it wasn’t my favorite performance of the night. I think she could be a stand-out if she would do songs that are completely her own style – take a ballad and make it a groovin’ dance number or take a country song and make it feel like it’s a Naima song. She’s different and that’s good. But as it feels like she’s still trying to figure out what kind of artist she is going to be – it’s hard to predict if America will keep her around.

My predictions: Karen Rodriguez or Ashthon Jones will go home.

Hello all – I haven’t posted my review on American Idol tonight because I got to go see Lenny Kravitz live in Salt Lake City at the Adobe Omniture Summit instead. (But I DO have TiVo and will get to my review shortly.)

In the meantime I have to say Lenny ROCKS! He was amazing, the band was amazing, the show was so much fun – I loved it! Of course, it’s hard to beat being at the front of a huge crowd -  touching distance from the stage and within 5 feet of him. Thanks Lenny and crew for the jammin’ great night!

And I’ll get back to American Idol tomorrow…

American Idol Top 10… Isn’t…

LOS ANGELES, CA - MARCH 03: American Idol Fin...

Image by Getty Images via @daylife

Well, American Idol has surprised America again – kind of. The new top 10 is actually a top 13!

I finally had time to watch this week’s performances and pick my top choices – and then I watched the results show and was happy that America and I are pretty much on the same page. In year’s past some contestants have gotten through and I’ve wondered about the decision, but this season I’m pretty happy with the contestants.

My top 5 boys would have been: Casey Abrams, James Durbin, Scotty McCreery, Jacob Lusk, and Paul McDonald (which turned out to be exactly the top 5 America chose) but I would have had Brett Loewenstern, and Stephano Langore as alternatives. I was a bit sad to see Brett go home, he’s a great kid and I hope he continues performing. However, with the talent pool from this year, it was a difficult call on some of the guys.I was happy that Stephano Langore was added into the top 13 – he reminds me a bit of David Archuleta at this point which bodes well for him getting a large pre-teen/teen female fan base.

My top 5 girls would have been Lauren Alaina, Pia Toscano, Thea Megia, Lauren Turner, and Haley Reinhart. (I was surprised Lauren Turner didn’t get through based on her performance but she was not one I had my eye on before this week.) I had Ashthon Jones, Karen Rodriguez, Kendra Chantelle, and Naima Adedapo as alternatives. But I wondered if Karen Rodriguez might get through based on getting a large Spanish fan base/vote – although I didn’t think her performance was as good as some of the others this week – I do like her.

Was anyone surprised that Naima Adedapo got through to the top 13? She is so unique and I like her – and if she doesn’t make it far in the competition I think she’d do very well on Project Runway – the outfits she’s created certainly stand out and gives her an image that stands out from the crowd.

American Idol Top 13:

Casey Abrams
Scotty McCreery
Jacob Lusk
Paul McDonald
James Durbin
Stephano Langore
Lauren Alaina
Pia Toscano
Karen Rodriguez
Thea Megia
Haley Reinhart
Ashthon Jones
Naima Adedapo

The season has started off well and I am certainly excited to see who continues to shine, and who becomes a star that I might not expect. Who is your favorite and why?

American Idol – Predictions and Favorites

Hi all –

I’m finally getting caught up on American Idol this season – and have just seen the Top 24 (obviously I’m still behind as I have not yet watched the performances from this week). But I wanted to weigh in before I watch so I can make my predictions based on what I’ve seen so far. Perhaps a bit weird, but hey, that’s how I roll.

So I think this is the year of the guys!

First, I cannot think of any of the girls who stood out for me in a really good way. They are all talented. But none had an instant star-quality for me. However, I may be surprised as the season goes forward.

Second, I predict Casey Abrams as the overall winner. He’s the whole package. Extremely likeable. Extremely talented. Extremely unique. I love his personality along with the fact that he always entertains – but not in the same way anyone else. My favorite line of the night was when Casey said “I’m here to prove that people like me can be sexy…” I love him!

I have a few other favorite guys including James Durbin, Scotty McCreery, and Paul McDonald – but I don’t think they will win this season.

James Durbin – so talented. I really like him a lot. I love the fact that he is shining in spite of the fact that he has faced Tourette’s syndrome and Aspergers. I hope he goes really far in the competition and I think he’ll have a great career. My only hesitation with him is that he reminds me quite a bit of Adam Lambert (and if any of you recall – Adam is too over-the-top for me.) However, I have to keep reminding myself that James is NOT Adam. James is James – sweet, loyal, kind-hearted, amazing James. Hopefully as the season continues I can disconnect the association.

Scotty McCreery – what a great kid. He’s only 17 which is crazy because his voice is so mature. I love his voice and no matter how the competition goes, I think he’ll get a recording contract (and I’d buy his album). I love his humble way – his desire to be the man he knows he is and should be – and his heart stands out for me. He’s super talented. I think if he were in a country singing competition – there would be no competition. But this is American Idol and simply because he’s SO country – I don’t think he’ll take home the title. But he’s certainly a favorite of mine.

Paul McDonald. Honestly, I didn’t remember him from any of the previous shows, but he did stand out for me in the final 24. He is unique and I love the tone of his voice when he sings. My only concern is that he’s so gentle in his singing, I’m not sure he could bring the crowd to their feet like James or Casey could. But again, I might be surprised. I really do like him as well.

As for the other top Guys:

Clint Jun Gamboa (he lost me when he kicked Jacee out of their group during Hollywood week) – he’s good, but not my favorite.

Robbie Rosch – has a nice voice, sweet and unassuming. But does not stand out as a star yet to me.

Tim Halperin – I love his voice – but even after just watching the show, I can’t even remember what he looks like. Not sure he’s going to stand out enough.

Jovany Barreto – as soon as he took off his shirt to show off for Jennifer Lopez during Hollywood week – well, impressive, but not so impressive. It was a bit too cheesy and awkward for me. That’s what I remember about him, rather than any of his performances.

Jordan Dorsey – I have to say that Jordan is really talented. However, my guess is he will get eliminated fairly quickly in the competition because of his personality and behavior during Hollywood week. America wants to have an American Idol winner they connect with emotionally and cheer for each week – rather than someone who is aggressive and considers others beneath them. I’ve seen this in previous seasons – talent gets you only so far – and connecting and being real takes the winner to the top.

Stephano Langore – I remember liking Stephano as well – but he’s like Tim – where I can’t really remember any of his performances or what he looks like very well. He might get lost in the crowd.

Jacob Lusk – I love this guy. His enthusiasm and unbridled personality are so over-the-top. He makes me laugh because he is SO completely emotional and expressive. I loved that when he was accepted into the top 24 he shouted, screamed, sang, and danced all the way down the aisle. He’s very likeable and has an incredible voice – but I also think that he might be a little too over-the-top for some fans in America. I remember when he cried and sobbed after one performance – and even though I like him a lot – that was a bit much for me. I think he’ll go further than many, but not likely to win.

Brett Loewenstern – he is such a sweet and likeable kid. I love that he took Jacee into his group and they became fast friends. For some reason I refer to Brett as Carrot Top – in a good way. Obviously it’s the hair. I really like Brett and hope he does well – I think his personality will carry him quite far as I’m sure he has lots of fans already. But with the competition this year, I’m not sure how well he will do. I think he’ll likely get further than some of the others simply because he’s memorable.

I was a little disappointed that Jacee Badeaux was cut – I love that kid. He has the voice of an angel and is so sweet. I have to admit that I cried when he was cut – he handled it with class and I was very proud of the way he handled everything during the competition. I hated to see him go. But I do agree with the judges that another year of preparation won’t hurt him. I hope he does come back and we get to see more of him in the future. I’m sure he has a very large fan base already – and you can count me among them!

I was also a bit sad to see John Wayne Schulz go – because I really liked him. I loved his personality and he certainly wasn’t bad to look at – but again, I also agreed with the judges in their decision to keep Scotty over John Wayne – mostly because Scotty stands out a bit more. But I hope we see more of John as well.

Letting Chris Medina go was especially hard on Jennifer Lopez. I can understand why. It’s not that Chris was the most talented in the competition. It was that she was touched by his story and his character – and hated to see him not move forward. But in comparison to the other competitors – I remember his story more than his performances. He was surely likeable and I wish him well. I was impressed that Jennifer’s emotions got the best of her – it made me like her even more – that she truly does want the best for the contestants and wants them to succeed. In years past I’ve felt that some of the judges (namely Simon) – would give criticism but it was without any feeling or care for the person. It was more important to Simon to be right, rather than seeing a person in front of him and wanting them to shine. Although entertaining, it didn’t give me the feeling that this season has given me – I want these contestants to do well – and I see the judges wanting the same thing. It’s quite nice.

So… enough of the boys… now on to the girls of American Idol.

Honestly there were a few that made it to the top 24 when I said out loud “Are you kidding me?” Some I really did not enjoy listening to at all… at all… I really mean… at all. But I’m not going to name any names. However, I will mention a few that I lean towards liking more than others.

Lauren Alaina – she’s only 16. Steven Tyler predicted during her audition “I think we found the one today.” I like her. She reminds me a little bit of a young, country-version of Kelly Clarkson.

Pia Toscano – I like the tone of her voice – it’s a bit richer than some of the others in the higher ranges. I love her beautiful dark, shiny hair. But I don’t remember specific performances.

Julie Zorrilla – She’s the girl whose parents were refugees from Columbia. I like her. Jennifer predicted Julie as the winner from the audition round. I’m not sure about that – as I think Casey Abrams is the one to beat this season – but of all the girls – she is in my top 3.

There are a lot of other cute girls this season – Thea Megia, Karen Rodriguez, Naima Adedapo, Haley Reinhart, Tatynisa Wilson, Lauren Turner, Rachel Zevita, Ashthon Jones, Kendra Chantelle. Some I don’t like their upper ranges, some are trying a little too hard to please rather than standing out on their own, and most blend in together for me.

I’m hoping the girls will step up and bring their own style/personality to their performances and can earn me as a fan – but for now – it’s all about the guys!

American Idol… I take it back

I have to say I was disappointed with the last American Idol episode. I was raving about how much the show had improved, and how the producers were not making fun of people as much anymore… and then came the LA auditions.

The last contestant of the day was obviously someone who struggled with a mental illness and they went over the top in showcasing him – rather than being sensitive to someone who needs compassion and help – it seemed quite cruel to me how they presented him. He is someone’s son, brother, and perhaps father. He was obviously too old for the show and the only reason producers put him through was to make fun of him.  I just felt bad for him, and wished the producers had treated him with respect by not putting him through to the judges. It just left a sad feeling – rather than excitement for this season of American Idol. Bad form producers – bad form.

American Idol – More Humor than Ever

Ryan Seacrest at the Seattle auditions of Amer...

Image via Wikipedia

It seems that this season of American Idol is all about the judges so far… what will Steven Tyler say that gets bleeped? Will he flirt or be suggestive with female contestants? Will JLo act like a Diva? She hasn’t so far but the rumors behind the scenes are that she’s not happy with Steven Tyler getting more attention than she does. Is Randy Jackson really irritated that he’s being compared to Simon Cowell this season? Who knows… but I do have to say that I’m anxious to move on from the spotlights on the judges and get to more about the contestants.

Apparently, the producers of American Idol seemed to think we needed more fun and more spotlights on the contestants, because tonight’s episode brought in more humor and family members than I remember from previous seasons at this stage.

Texas brought out some great talent, and a few standouts.

I could be wrong … but I think this is the first time a contestant’s family member was invited to join the judges at the judges table and provide feedback after the audition. Corey Levoy from Longview, TX did a great job and his sister Brooks offered up a “heck yes” to sending him to Hollywood. The judges all agreed and Corey ended up getting 4 “Heck yeses”. I loved the chemistry between the judges and their responses to contestants tonight.

Seventeen year old Hollie Cavanagh didn’t do as well – her rendition of “At Last” was all over the place. Randy said no immediately but Jennifer Lopez gave her another chance and asked if she could sing something else. Her second song was much better but she couldn’t get through the tears. I thought it was sweet they would give her a shot at Hollywood, but at such a young age, and being so emotional I worry that she will get stomped on in Hollywood. It’s a huge chance for her and I hope she can get over her nerves and do well. Only time will tell. My initial reaction is that we won’t see much of her during Hollywood week and she will go home early.

My favorite of the evening was adorable cowboy John Wayne Schulz. I’m a wantin’ me a cowboy now! I loved his dad – reminded me of my farmer uncles – good hearted, good-humored, hard-working, salt of the earth man. My favorite part of the show was when they talked about wanting a rough and tough son – which is why they named their son John Wayne. Ryan Seacrest joked that “it would have really sucked if I had been your son” and the dad fired right back “No, you wouldn’t be the way you are right now, my friend.” Totally funny. Loved the whole family! And John Wayne Schulz can sing! I predict he’s going to do very well in American Idol – he’s so likable – and darling. He’s a little young for me, but I have a few nieces I’d like to set him up with… very cute guy. And my second favorite part of the night was after he was told he was going to Hollywood – his mom’s first response was “Where do we get his golden ticket?” So cute.

Of course, there was also the funny moment with Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson on Day 2 in Texas. Steven was asked if he was nervous doing American Idol, and he responded “You bet your bootie… and talking about Jennifer anyway…” He really is quite funny.

The spotlight on Courtney Penry was really humorous. She went on and on about wanting to meet Ryan and wanting to impress him. “Ryan Seacrest is the sexiest man alive… He’s amazing… I’ve been dreaming about this day forever. I will marry him someday…” The editing was spot on. When meeting Ryan for the first time she began crying, Ryan said: “Are you alright?” She responded “I’m just so excited to meet you.” Ryan sat down and replied, “You’re not crying because you’re meeting me… ” She nodded, and he seemed really surprised, “Really? … uh, Thank you.” The music of Lionel Richie in the background swelled as the two hugged. But then it got a bit stalkerish when they edited in a previous interview where Courtney got wild-eyed and proclaimed, “Ryan Seacrest will be mine someday. You know you love me. Because I love you and I’ve loved you forever.” Yikes, a bit too much – but really edited well.

There were quite a few other contestants who did well in Texas, as well as a cute couple from Scottsdale Arizona – but they made such a cheesy show of their “love story” I wasn’t really all that impressed by their auditions – a little too much of the over-the-top gazing into each others’ eyes and running through the fields for me, but they did well and I was at least glad that they didn’t get split up and both are headed to Hollywood.

Janelle Arthur from Tennessee was another of my favorites. Her voice was pleasing and pure. She’s gorgeous and I think she’ll be compared to  Carrie Underwood this season.

But then, of course, things got weird at American Idol. Line dancing, mascot costume (Armadillo), off key warblings, strange angel-slash-viking girl, Randy commenting and making it clear that he was not having any sympathy for the non-talented.

Typically saving the best for last, I was excited to see who they would bring up – Casey Abrams (the Seth Rogan look-alike), totally blew me away. I was kind of scared at first, not knowing what to expect, but he was awesome! I like him a lot and he’s one I will remember for sure. The judges didn’t even need to discuss, all together they shouted “Yes!” and the party began.

Yet another episode of American Idol has come and gone – but it’s brought me even more excitement – as well as more fun than I remember from season’s past. I love, love, love the way they are handling this season – lots of fun, not as much “making-fun” of people, and some great talent. What do you think about the season so far?

I was a skeptic… American Idol now Better than Ever!

American Idol

I am the first to admit that I was very skeptical that I would enjoy this season of American Idol. Without Simon around, I wondered if there would be any judge whom I would agree with most of the time, or who would make the show fun to watch – waiting to see his or her response. I was not really sad to see Ellen go (I’m sorry Ellen -I’m a HUGE fan) – but I did find that it was hard for me to watch her having a hard time being hard on the contestants. :) She is more of a nurturer and fan of talent than a critical judge – at least to their faces.

I didn’t really miss Paula last season – she’s sweet to the contestants but I did find it difficult to understand what she was trying to say all of the time. She has a way of pausing at random and strange times in her dialogue and is a little bit all over the place. But once in a while it was fun to see the bickering between her and Simon.

I liked Kara DioGuardi as a judge – as she seemed to understand the industry and give relevant feedback. However, she did cross the line a few times with her comments and suggestive looks at a few of the cute male contestants – which just made it plain awkward all the way around. I think she took the job seriously – probably a bit TOO seriously – which made her a good judge but not fun or for really good TV.

Enough of my musings about previous seasons of American Idol. Back to NOW.

I’m truly loving the tone and feel of this season. I actually am finding myself becoming a fan of Steven Tyler – crazy I know. He is very funny. I love that he gets into the music. He is a softy but also can be blunt. You never quite know what to expect from him – which makes for GREAT TV. I love Jennifer Lopez and how she can be moved by the music and contestants – and how she can laugh and take the process seriously but still have fun with it. It’s very fun to see her “deer in the headlights” look when a contestant is belting out non-melodic screeches. And how you can tell what she’s thinking as she immediately puts her head down and cannot look at the offending warbler.

Randy Jackson – it’s about time that Randy shine! He has the experience and background – and can be honest but not really brutal. In season’s past I think the drama between Simon and Paula pushed Randy into a background role. But now it feels as though all three judges are equals – all have their own skills set and expertise – and all have valid and relevant opinions. I find myself wanting to hear what everyone of them thinks – not just waiting for the “all-important Simon opinion.”

Needless to say – this skeptic has turned around completely and is enjoying this season of American Idol – probably more than any of the past seasons. Crazy I know. Now once we get to Hollywood week – I reserve the right to change my opinion yet again – as it will be interesting to see how the new judges respond to their new responsibilities – but I have to say that I’m excited to see what comes next.

And… we’re back! American Idol begins again.

I finally got around to watching the first 2 episodes of American Idol – and have to say I was pleasantly surprised. I was certainly not looking forward to some of the changes and have heard negative comments about Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez. I actually liked that it was hard for Jennifer to say no – showing she is not all caught up in herself but has a heart and is compassionate towards those who want to live their dreams but don’t fit with American Idol. I was also surprised that I liked (mostly) what Steven Tyler had to say. I loved that he got into the music – adding his tapping and at times joining in – it seemed to lighten the mood and relax those auditioning. Now, there wasn’t much banter or commenting – so I’ll be interested to hear what the judges say during Hollywood week – as that is where their opinions will likely be more apparent.

What did you think?

Did J-Lo surprise you – in a good way? Did you find the chemistry between the judges good? Or do you think that American Idol will fail without Simon Cowell? Are you going to keep watching and see how it goes? Or are you converting over to Paula Abdul‘s new “Live to Dance” show? (I watched the first couple of episodes and it’s just not very good – I’m not sure why they selected some of the acts, and the quality isn’t great – I wanted to like it, but really didn’t.) Oh well – that’s good – so now I can continue on with American Idol this season.)
