Truly an American Idol Shocker!
It’s not often that I’m truly shocked by the results of American Idol. Yes, of course, I was surprised a few weeks ago when Casey Abrams had the lowest votes and the judges saved him. But at least I had an explanation for it – as I figured his fans thought he was certainly safe and didn’t feel as much incentive to vote for him that early in the show.
But this week – Pia Toscano in the bottom three? Really? I mean, she has not been my favorite – as I’ve felt she’s too refined and not really connecting with the audience. But this week watching her struggle a bit on the performance aspect made me see her in a new light – a little less “perfect”. But I really was shocked with Ryan announced her in the bottom three.
Rounding out the rest of the bottom three was Jacob Lusk, and Stefano Langore. Neither of whom have been my favorites either – but I was surprised Stefano was in the bottom as I thought some of the others were a bit weaker than he was last night. With the bottom three announced – I figured Jacob would be the one going home.
Just to interject here about Iggy Pop – what… I mean what??? Ick and can I say Ick again? Oh please. I know they were trying to get a superstar rocker on stage .. but Iggy Pop with no shirt, out of breath, and just plain icky… come on American Idol … I think you can do better than that.
Back to the results…
Ryan told Jacob he was leaving … to go back to safety at the couches. And then Pia Toscano was announced at the one leaving. It was clear that everyone was in shock – Stefano, other contestants, and judges. I’m certain if the judges had another save they would have pulled it out immediately and sent her back to safety.
Jennifer said she had no idea what just happened. Randy was in shock. But I can tell you that even though Pia is an amazing singer – there HAS to be a connection between the contestant and the audience. We have to see the contestants as someone we like, we see as an underdog or similar to ourselves (imperfect but wanting to live the dream) and we have to want them to succeed. I think Pia’s challenge was she came onto American Idol when she could have already been putting out albums. She seemed overly confident (even though at times she said she was scared – it didn’t come across that she was scared). She was a bit reserved and classy – which is GREAT for a performer but for an American Idol contestant we need to see more personality and anything to help us connect.
My prediction is that Pia Toscano will be a recording contract very quickly and be the first of the contestants from the season to have her album out there. I also think she could easily get a guest spot on Glee, or other TV/movies. Good luck Pia!

American Idol is no longer a talent contest-it’s a popularity contest voted by the majority of pre-teen girls. It is now as fake as WWE wrestling. I was a AI viewer and fan for 10 yrs and after tonite will not watch or vote again. I am DONE with American Idol!!!

Anyone ever notice the similarity between Scotty and Alfred E. Neuman(Mad Magazine)?

Oh that’s funny. I can totally see the similarities.

Seriously, so shocking. Shocking like Daughtry. I’m sure she will be fine, but I was still so surprised.

There is a flaw in the format of the show if one of the most talented performers gets voted off. Pia should have gotten a second chance. I think that the judges should have unlimited saves to prevent these kinds of mistakes. The question begs to be answered: is Idol a talent show or a popularity contest?

Hey, Randy and Jennifer owe Stefano an apology…
Why didn’t they just say, “Wow, too bad, we thought Stefano was the one…’ How rude! He is more of an idol that some fake boob girl whose parents have groomed her to support them some day!

By the way, who votes, isn’t it young girls between 12 and 17 or so? I really doubt they would vote for Pia Toscano and didn’t because she is fake. Almost all the others, Paul especially have been semi prfessionals for a while and it shows. The others are true kids from no where that have come to the stage, hoping they can really sing and you know what? They are so good. I think Paul and then the “gospel” singer should go next.

Last night’s elimination of Pia is a travesty. I have been a faithful viewer of this show for the last 4 seasons. Now due to this elimination I will no longer watch the show. The “American Idol producers” BETTER PAY CAREFUL ATTENTION to this one. What happened last night is history repeating itself for this type of show. The voting structure is painfully bad. Viewers SHOULD NOT be allowed to vote multiple times (I think the web site states a max of 50 votes) and the judges need to be allowed a major vote. The “judges save” is a good tool but should be used more, especially in cases like this elimination. Look at the reaction of the studio audience and the judges last night! What a horror that was! Additionally adding help from music producers this year was a great idea. It definely improved the performances this season. Perhaps they should also have brought in choreographers to help with the “body moves” for the contestants. Maybe this would have helped Pia?
Pia was clearly a “front runner” and should have at least have made it to the top 5. This elimination could have jeopardized her career!

I cannot believe that Pia is gone. This just shows how messed up American Idol’s voting system is. The fact that you can vote, text, login and vote a hundreds of time for a contestant can easily skew an honest voting system. You think that AI would have figured this out by now! Some of us have a life and don’t want to vote those ridiculous amounts to try to keep someone in. What DWTS does makes more sense now by limiting the number of times you can vote. Every vote counts, so be picky as to who you vote for. As of yesterday I will not longer watch American Idol, removed them from my dvr and will spend my relaxation time on something worth while.

Interesting reading all hoop la on the results. I agree Pia is a remarkable and beautiful ‘talent’… while she and Jacob Lusk appear to be flawless in their performances, neither have shown any diversity, so they are easily forgotten! The memorable performances for me have been of those who are stretching the boundaries of that which they do best. I think Haley is remarkable!!!! still a bit nervous and perhaps not showing her full personality and raw talent off… let it rip Haley, go for it. If perchance Haley you are reading this, then check out this youtube… i think this song would be an excellent choice for you : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lsELe5FTKE&feature=share
p.s. love the talent, and LOVE the judges!!!

We thought Pia has a nice voice but seemed to be like a “Barbie Doll” Model singing Ballad style only looking the same on every song. Needs to lose the model expressions unless she wants that above the music and that is fine too. She is not as diverse as many of the other Idol contestants hence her early exit. She needs to watch back the whole season and rework her style to include movement, stage swagger, rock, pop, billboard chart thinking! She should audition again like Haley did and come back with more passion! She just might pull off a top 3 or a winner next time?
