Breaking News: Paula Abdul’s Replacement for American Idol… It’s Ellen!
Well — I cannot believe it. Ellen DeGeneres will replace Paula Abdul as a judge on American Idol. I love American Idol and have been curious as to who would replace Paula – but I never dreamed the replacement could be so great. Ellen has perfect comedic timing and is so much fun. I think her banter with Simon will really be something to look forward to and I actually think people will tune in to American Idol – just to hear what Ellen has to say. Great news!
(CNN) — Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres will join the judges’ panel on “American Idol” for the show’s ninth season beginning in 2010, a Fox spokeswoman confirmed Wednesday.

“I’m thrilled to be the new judge on American Idol,” DeGeneres said Wednesday. “I’ve watched since the beginning, and I’ve always been a huge fan. So getting this job is a dream come true, and think of all the money I’ll save from not having to text in my vote.”
The popular comedian and entertainer will fill a seat left vacant by Paula Abdul, who announced she was leaving the show in August after eight seasons.
DeGeneres will sit alongside Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi after auditions are completed for the popular talent show, which starts in January. Until then, guest judges including Mary J. Blige, Kristin Chenoweth, Joe Jonas and Neil Patrick Harris will fill the empty slot, Fox said.
“We are thrilled to have Ellen DeGeneres join the “American Idol” judges’ table this season. She is truly one of America’s funniest people and a fantastic performer who understands what it’s like to stand up in front of audiences and entertain them every day,” said Mike Darnell, president of Alternative Entertainment for Fox.
“We feel that her vast entertainment experience, combined with her quick wit and passion for music, will add a fresh new energy to the show.”
DeGeneres brings years of experience in front of a live audience as the host of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” now in its seventh season, and the host of the 79th Annual Academy Awards.
In her new role, the Emmy Award-winning talk show host faces the task of winning over Abdul’s supporters, who lamented that her departure would irreparably alter the show.
The singer-dancer turned “Idol” judge was known for her positive comments to the singers participating in the shows. She was also known for her on-camera run-ins with Cowell and other judges in the show.
“With sadness in my heart, I’ve decided not to return to Idol. I’ll miss nurturing all the new talent, but most of all being a part of a show that I helped from day 1 become an international phenomenon,” a statement on Abdul’s verified Twitter account said last month.

I have watched "AI" since the beginning and really enjoy the show.
Sadly, with the addition of Ellen D, I will no longer be tuning in. For me, the woman is the most annoying thing to ever hit television.

I am not a fan of Ellen and will never be. So I will no longer be watching American Idol. I do not believe the people at Idol could not find someone better. I am very disappointed!!

I like Ellen but not as a judge for American Idol. What expertise does she offer us? Nothing that I'd like to see as a qualification for a judge. I won't be watching American Idol!

just another way to shove homosexuality down our throats! she has no talent as a singer or music experiance so why is she getting the job? to promote homo's is why!

I'll definitely miss Paula but I think Ellen will be a great replacement . Now if they would just get rid of Kara things would be really looking up.

I think this is horrible. I bet Simon is not pleased as well. Who is he going to flirt with? He doesn't like Kara and Ellen is gay. Furthermore, I'll miss Paula's dancing. Is Ellen going to dance while the contestants sing? Oh my, that kind of dancing on AI will make me sick. Every sentence out of her mouth will try to be a joke. How can contestants take her "criticism" seriously when she's just trying to be funny. "Hey look at me". That is all she is: an attention-stealer who thinks way too highly of herself. Sorry AI, you've lost a long devoted fan. I will give one episode a shot, but if I get nauseous at all, it's over.

From an advid AI fan since the first year, of all the celebrities to choose from, why Ellen? She is not the role model persona one would expect to fill such a high profile job. I cannot stand her and I know I am not the only one. I just may have watched my last season of AI as I cannot tolerate her! Paula, why did you leave us???

Love Ellen as comedian & actress – but not as judge. On "So you think you can Dance" she added nothing, not even good humor. A good judge should have some experience on what they are judging. THIS IS NOT HER AREA OF EXPERTISE !!!

Ellen is OK, but tends to babble. Four judges is too many as it is without Ellens unfunny, lengthy comments. Bad Choice! Guest judges would be more interesting and something to look forward to.
